What is Expansive culinary?:
Expansive Culinary is a research project which investigates cooking traditions and the world of food. I intend to develop a multi-media artistic approach to this exploration, based on performance, video and new media. My interest in cuisine and the methods of fusion cooking have led me to attempt to construct a platform from which I can utilize performance techniques set in diverse settings. As a result, these platforms are transformed into laboratorial territories from which I can explore a landscape that is both visual and physical – the junction between the world of food and the gestures involved in its preparation; which is in and of itself, a performance.
Through this exploration, there is a private world revealed by means of the significance given to the “stories” each person tells. Via a collection of interviews, I am allowed a look into this universe rich in material and construct a dialogue. This dialogue is in turn explored by a visual artist uncovering the evolving relationship between the concrete act of cooking, the movements and gestures of the individual doing the cooking and the social act of savoring a meal.

One of the main formats employed in the Expansive Culinary project, is that of an “at home” performance which begins with a selection process of the participants, using the webbsite as a work tool. The menus are published and the interested parties are encouraged to send e-mails demonstrating their desire to host the event in their homes. The candidate showing the most enthusiasm towards the project is selected as the host of the event.

MENU:
Starter: Cockles with coriander and ginger
Main corse: Grilled mackerel garnished with grilled tomato cream with boiled potatoes and salad “Algarvia”.
Dessert: Icecream with crispy “coscorões” (kind fo portuguese wafers) with honey and lemon syrup

Rules:
- The menu above will be cooked at home of the first person to send an email with the subject “I want to expand.”
- The session involves the payment of a fee of 150 €.
- The cost of ingredients will be calculated based on number of participants and shall be borne by those requesting the performance.
- The performance is only achieved in households and may not exceed 10 participants.
- Exceptions may be open case by case  with  extra costs to be agreed between the parties.
- The house that receives the performance should be equipped with a grill (preferably charcoal) and basic utensils and kitchen ware.
- The session will be broadcast on Internet and the participants must consent the transmission of images taken during the session.
- The session will take place in any geographic location, being charged a premium to travel outside the western Algarve.
