OBRONI | Cooking in Ghana: collaboration, community and performative action is an exhibition arising from my participation in the “Sansa International artist’s workshop” within the scope of the Triangle Art Trust, which took place in Kumasi, a city located in the interior of Ghana. In this project, I developed a series of “culinary” actions in an improvised space in the open air, where I cooked in collaboration with other artists. Taking advantage of the workshop structure, which brings together artists of different nationalities, it has been possible to bring together cultures and people around a cloth table arranged on the ground in the garden of the studio where the workshop took place. In this way, with the help of participants from Ghana, I produced several local dishes in addition to some Portuguese cuisine and, in collaboration with artists from Iran, India and China, several dishes from other countries.
The word OBRONI means “white man”. It is commonly used to identify foreigners in the streets and markets of the city of Kumasi in Ghana. This word has served as a theme for a community-based artistic and collaborative approach, in which performance, video, and photography intersect with cooking. This exhibition forms part of a broader project which I have been developing called Culinária Expansiva.
